Bundy's Greiner out of Hockeyroos squad

HOCKEY: The future is still bright for Bundaberg's Rebecca Greiner despite a setback to her Hockeyroos debut.

The 19-year-old is out of the upcoming four nations tournament in Japan after succumbing to a thumb injury.

Greiner, last week, was named in the Hockeyroos squad for the event to be held from September 12 to 16 in Japan.

The former St Luke's Anglican School student mentioned to the NewsMail that she was suffering from a fractured thumb, suffered a few weeks before the tournament but was hopeful of making the team.

She even said at the time that her fitness was good enough to compete.

But now she has been forced to miss and has been replaced by ACT forward Naomi Evans.

Hockeyroos coach Paul Gaudoin said Greiner was still a major part of the team despite missing on this occasion.

"It's really unfortunate timing for Rebecca ahead of her potential debut,” he said.

"But we hope to see more from her soon.

"Naomi has been given the opportunity as goal scoring is an area where we need to continue to look for options.

"She's an established athlete at 26-years-old and showed during her recent VAA scholarship that she can score goals, so that's earned her this opportunity.”

Greiner will now look to recover fully ahead of the Australian Hockey League that starts next month on October 6 around the country.

She will compete for Queensland, looking to win the women's sides title for the first time since 2016 after making the final last year.

Greiner will then head overseas in November as part of the under-23 Australian development team that will compete in China in a tournament.
