Brisbane Broncos hopeful of NRLW return
Broncos women's coach Kelvin Wright says the club has been buoyed by news the NRLW competition will return in 2020, following revelations a schedule could be finalised within the coming weeks.
There were concerns that this year's women's NRL premiership would be cancelled amid the crippling coronavirus pandemic, with two of the four teams, the Warriors and Roosters, forced to review the future of their respective sides due to financial pressure.
The competition was set to be played in September to coincide with the NRL's finals series but has been hanging in the balance since coronavirus impacted the code.
However, the governing body on Friday announced they had resumed talks with broadcasters about hosting the national women's competition later this year.
A decision is set to be made in the coming weeks on the NRLW schedule, which would likely be played later in the year.
Wright said it was a step in the right direction to get the women's game back underway.
"It's really positive that they've come out and said it in public," Wright said.
"It's a real positive that it hasn't been ruled out. It's a really important part of the game and shouldn't just be thrown out.
"The girls are just itching to get back to playing."
The premiership-winning coach has remained in contact with his playing group during the COVID-19 shutdown and has been providing programs to remain fit.
Yesterday was supposed to be the inaugural statewide women's competition grand final before the season was cancelled due to the pandemic.
Wright said he was impressed with how well the women remained fit during the lockdown.
He said the time off had also allowed several star players, such as Millie Boyle and Ali Brigginshaw, to recover from serious injuries suffered at the start of the year.
Interim NRL boss Andrew Abdo said the governing body was still working on getting the NRLW season back underway.
"The women's game is a priority and something we're all passionate about," Abdo said.
"It has been part of the discussions and remains a priority for us but we haven't finalised what that schedule looks like for this year.
"That's something we will do over the coming weeks."
