Aussie team riders crash out in Tour de France

AUSTRALIAN team Orica-GreenEDGE has suffered a nightmare third stage of the Tour de France.

Team leader Simon Gerrans was forced out for the second tour running, this time with a suspected broken wrist, while Daryl Impey also quit with a right shoulder problem after a pile-up.

Also caught in the wreckage were Australian Michael Matthews (chest), Switzerland's Michael Albasini (knee) and Briton Simon Yates (ribs).

Yellow jersey holder Fabian Cancellara completed the stage but later withdrew with a broken bone in his back. Others to abandon the race were Frenchman William Bonnet, Dutchman Tom Dumoulin and Russian Dmitry Kozontchuk.

The big winner on the day was race favourite Chris Froome, who avoided the crash to take over the overall lead and the yellow jersey. He leads Germany's Tony Martin by one second after finishing second to Spain's Joaquim Rodriguez on the stage.
