Asylum seeker dies hours after arriving in detention

A 52-YEAR-OLD asylum seeker died suddenly on Saturday, a few hours after arriving on Christmas Island.

In a statement the Department of Immigration and Citizenship said the man, from Myanmar, had been an "irregular maritime arrival".

He was transferred to a hospital from the processing area "a few hours" after arriving on Christmas Island.

The incident is now the subject of an investigation, although DIAC said in the statement "early indications are that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the man's death".

"The department expresses its sympathy to the man's family," a DIAC spokesman said.

"The matter has been referred to the relevant agency and DIAC will co-operate with any resulting investigation."

Meanwhile, the government has announced another two asylum seeker boats were intercepted late last week.

A vessel carrying 71 people was stopped north-west of Christmas Island on Friday, while another with 86 passengers was intercepted north-east of Ashmore Islands on Thursday.
