OPINION: Why I am skipping breakfast for a month

THE decision was made for me on the weekend.

I pulled out four shirts from my wardrobe - only to find that they were now all too tight for me.

Yes the winter expansion, combined with an "eat-all-you-can" holiday has put my bathroom scales on heavy-duty alert.

Before you shake your head and say "Peter you have already told us you were going to lose weight and get healthy", let me put my hand up and say yes, I led you astray.

The pushbike that I was going to faithfully start riding to work has remained in the garage with flat tyres, and daily morning walks have made way for an extra piece of toast while reading the papers.

My road to a lighter and fitter me will this time revolve around regular swimming sessions at the Swim Factory and a new eating regime that I am told will work.

From today, I have adopted a simple program that will see me only eating between 1-8pm.

I have been reliably told it will see me drop weight in a matter of weeks.

I certainly hope so, because the morning meal I'm sacrificing is also the one I enjoy the most.

This diet is called intermittent fasting, and it has been around for a long time.

My decision to go down this path was prompted because I just couldn't face up to another month of diets like the Pritikin or Atkins.

If you believe what you read about intermittent fasting it falls into the category of "simple enough that you'll actually do it, but meaningful enough that it will actually make a difference."

For the record; I started yesterday at an uncomfortable 120.6kg. My goal is to get down to 105kg.

Yes, like Michelle Payne, I also believe in miracles.

I will weigh back in at the end of the month to let you know if this new eating regime actually works, or if once again I strayed from my goals.
