Greens plan aims to put an end to supermarket wars

AN $85 million plan to connect farmers direct to consumers, circumventing the major supermarkets, is a key policy The Greens will take to the election.

The minor party, which has been trying to appeal to rural voters, released details of the policy on Sunday.

Leader Senator Christine Milne said the money would go towards new farmers markets, direct online food delivery sales and regional marketing and food hubs.

The policy aims to break the imperative that farmers sell their produce at the cheapest possible price to access national markets through Coles and Woolworths.

If returned to the cross bench, the minor party also hopes to secure funding for the program to allow farmer cooperatives to supply larger contracts, rather than terms being dictated by the supermarkets.
