Great things to do in the Gympie region
IT'S been a tough year, but with COVID-19 restrictions slowly easing around our great state, you're probably looking for something to do.
We have you covered. Check out the list below because there is more to the Gympie region than you might think.
Feed the dolphins at Tin Can Bay
The calm waters of Tin Can Bay in the Gympie region is one of the last places you can interact with beautiful, Australian Humpback Dolphins. Come meet Chompy, Squirt and Patch who have been visiting tourists and locals alike for decades.

Strike it rich panning for gold
If you are looking for an "Enriching" experience Gympie City's Gold Mining Museum is the perfect place to start. Spend a couple of hours at the museum perfecting your panning technique before collecting your fossicker's licence and panning gear and trying it for real. Who knows what you might find when you scratch the surface.
Tour de Mary Valley
If cycling is your thing, grab the bikes and the family and head for the new Mary Valley Rail Trail which link the historic town of Imbil with Brooloo.
If something a little more daring is your go, try the Victory trails at Victory Heights. With a 25km signed trail network, the Victory trails has a ride for every skill level.

If endurance is more your speed the Kilkivan to Kingaroy Rail Trail has you covered. Cycle through the quaint country towns of Kilkivan through Goomeri and Murgon onto the peanut capital of Australia, Kingaroy.
Blow off some steam
The Mary Valley Rattler is a steam journey that pays homage to our region's rail heritage. Leaving Gympie station every Sunday and Wednesday take the journey through the picturesque Mary Valley.
Go through the sleepy village of Dagun before arriving in Amamoor. A unique experience which will help you discover this special part of the world.

Hit the trail
Are you a family that loves spending time together? Head to the recently constructed river to rail trail.
You can cycle, run or walk the sealed and unsealed paths. The 9km trail weaves through the city, connecting the Mary River with the historic Gympie railway station, you can stop to refuel at one of the cafes along the way.

Strawberry fields forever
Looking for a farm gate to plate culinary experience? Cooloola Berries is the place to go.
Nestled in the foothills of Wolvi, pick fresh berries to your heart's content or let the littlies do it while you put your feet up and enjoy a barrister made coffee.
Up close and personal
The Gympie region offers close encounters of a different kind. It's the perfect time to take a gentle paddle in the natural surrounds of Honeymoon Bay and Double Island Point, part of the Great Sandy Marine Park.
See large bottlenose dolphin pods and even humpback whales as they head north to give birth. Six of the world's seven marine turtle species are also regular guests.

Fish the day away
If you love your fishing, then chances are you'll know about Gympie region's Lake Borumba.
With some of the best fishing around (bass, golden and silver perch, saratoga, catfish) this fishermen's friend keeps the professionals coming back year after year and it's also a great spot for the fishing "apprentice".
And the nearby village of Imbil has everything you need to keep your rod in the water.
